With our second online AGM having been completed a week ago (I do apologise for the lateness in having the minutes and results out), I can say I think we're getting better at it.  I have noted that something we should really try explaining better is the legal jargon we use, for example, when to use the "abstain" response.  Anyhoooo, here they are:

Feedback from Question: "What events or speakers would you like to see, hear, or meet in the region?:

• Good question. Some more Hutt Valley events would be great. I'll need to think about this more
• Quiz night. Would be keen for another sesion on copyright and DRM
• events in the Hutt please.
  political discussion about real questions in the profession e.g. "value of being RLIANZA, versus qualifications". MIS vs teaching qual, teacher/librarianship. 
  a partnered event with SLANZA would be nice

• Really enjoyed LIANZA b'day at Film archive and Meet the Leaders keep it up

Sadly, we do farewell Paddy Plunket and Anne Thompson at this point in the minutes of the AGM.  We wish Paddy and Anne all the best and hope to continue to see them in the library and information management community.

Charlotte Clements spoke to the Chair’s Report and thanked Committee members for their contributions during the year. She noted important contributions of Committee members in moving the records of the Committee online, particularly that of Anne Thompson and Timothy Greig (incoming member).

Regional Councillor’s Report
Paddy Plunket introduced herself as Region Councillor, Subject Team Manager at the Parliamentary Library and SLIS member. She thanked the Committee for support of her as Region Councillor and reported on LIANZA Council activities during the 2007/08 year. Paddy congratulated Te Upoko o te Ika a Maui Region members on their successes during the year, including the Fellowships awarded to Rowena Cullen and John Stears, Letter of Recognition to Margaret Calder, and Associateships to Fiona Rigby, Gael Lamont and Kat Turner at the Rotorua Conference. The Region had 116 Professional Registrants which was excellent. Continuing Professional Development was a major focus for LIANZA and an Advisory Committee had been established and a Coordinator appointed. Future Thinking Workshops had been held in every region and had been useful for prioritising LIANZA activities and gaining feedback that members valued Continuing Professional Development opportunities, networking, and good communication from LIANZA.

Easter weekend musings

Hi everyone,

My name's Hana and I'm a commitee member on the Wellington Regional Council... of LIANZA that is, not the ever-reliable WRC.

I just had a brief musing before, on a Saturday night yes. Nonethless it's worth writing about I think. I was reading through the pages of our LIANZA website presence, (visit it if you haven't already) and came across this thing called Magpie online. I've actually already come across it and wondered what it was, and at the time, suggested archiving it because it was just some wierd thing on our webpages that I didn't know anything about. Funny how you want to get rid of things (in some way or another) that you don't understand or don't want to know about at the time. Anyway, I gather Magpie was some post-print newsletter, pre-blog sort of Wellington region industry updatey thing, and it's interesting to see how time's have changed. As I understand, it was started by a former committee member, Neil Coup. I'll leave the corrections about this and other facts in this post to current more clued-up committee members :)

I'm in the process of writing a web development strategy for our committee, including a style-guide (and the way I'm talking it up, it's going to be ummm pretty far-out!), and it's good to come back to see how things used to be done here in terms of communication. Back in the good ol' days of the early 1990's, there was a format of a "...beige multi-page newsletter..." which is an improvement I gather, from the "...variously-coloured double-sided single page..." previous era.

My how times have changed. We didn't even have consultation regarding if fellow committee members approved of my recent template change on this blog! I'm continuing to read this archive as I type this, as history is so important to document.

By the way, I thought I'd make a note of the reason why this previous regional newsletter was called "Magpie". It's because it included lots of shiny things from around the place. Cute, but doesn't hold a huge lot of relevance anymore and isn't intuitive. I've been trying to come up with a catchy sort of thing for our committee, but yeah, to no avail. Maybe just saying the reo translation faster will make us sound cooler?? Back to basics - we are LIANZA Te Upoko o Te Ika a Maui!

Anyway, it's quite amazing how things change. There seemed to be a bit of documentation back just 10 or 15 years ago in this regional committee. Now I don't see it as much, but I haven't actually seen a committee member pull out a folder full of past minutes during a meeting as I haven't even met my fellow members! (been in Perth, forgive me, I'm still there actually, oh the shame).

So times have changed, yeah yeah, and everything moves a lot faster now, we all love nz-libs, but we love blogs just as much, and RSS feeds and other stuff that I'm sure Timothy can fill me in on. NZ-libs is a stalwart for us I think. I've been keeping up with your conversations, oh yes, and some really interesting stuff is going down on there. I propose (actually Paddy proposes) that we regularly post something controversial up here and let you know about it on nz-libs. Good idea? I thought so too.

Anyhoo, 'til my next musing/aimless ramble - watch out! Stay safe! aaand remember to return your library books on time!

Thank you to all the people that responded to our "Tell us what you want!" questionnaire.

So what did you tell us?

• Lunchtime and Evening events were equal in popularity. About 15% of you preferred Breakfast Meetings or didn't mind. So we will make sure that we vary the times and days of the meetings that we plan.

• Library Tours and Presentations were the most popular format, followed closely by Interactive Workshops and Social Events.

• "Top Tech Tips" came out tops in our list of suggested topics and some of you made particular comments about wanting to learn new technology skills in an interactive way. Coaching and training, stress management and career development were also popular.

• In your comments you also suggested events for library assistants, people new to the profession or people that want to make career moves.

This is all really useful information to guide our planning and we'll do our best to provide something for everyone!

We'd love some help - do you know anyone that might be interested in delivering any of the presentations/events? If so then give send us an email - we'd love to hear from you.

Our Committee would also love to have some new members to help us make stuff happen. If you're interested in planning some great events and joining our small and dynamic wee team then let us know.

Our aim is to organise professional development events and opportunities that are useful, interesting, relevant and fun.
